Authorities have confirmed that a deceased person found on campus early Monday morning was a Portland State student. The Oregon Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the death as a suicide.
“This is a tragic loss to the PSU community,” said PSU Director of Media and Public Relations Kenny Ma. “We have reached out to the student’s family, and we are offering our services and resources that they may need at this time as they grieve.”
Portland Police officers arrived near the southeast corner of PSU campus early Jan. 22 and found a deceased individual.
According to PPB Public Information Officer Christopher Burley, police suspected no foul play and the death may have been a suicide.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to try to determine the cause of death.
According to KATU News, PPB blocked streets surrounding PSU Parking Structure 1 from SW Broadway to SW 6th Ave. and from SW Harrison St. to SW Hall St. However, traffic was back to normal by 7 a.m.
TriMet’s MAX light rail Green, Orange and Yellow lines at Southwest 6th Avenue and Southwest Hall Street were briefly disrupted, but resumed running before 4 a.m.
Ma added that students can call the Center for Student Health and Counseling at 503-725-2800 should they need counseling services. Students can also call the PSU Coordination Assessment Response Education (CARE) Team at 503-725-2800 to help coordinate services for others who may be in distress.
