“The End of Development? Vietnam’s Adaptation to Automation”
Description:
The impact of automation on low-income countries is little studied, but it is likely to have large effects in the near future. Growth of Vietnam’s highly successful industry has been responsible for most of the income growth in Vietnam and most of the employment creation since Đổi Mới. New automated techniques already in development could change that success very quickly, especially those that replace the sewing of apparel and footwear, and robotic electronics assembly. The question for Vietnam is whether it can adopt new automation techniques rather than losing production to countries with greater technological capacity. Crucial elements needed to keep more automated production in Vietnam are improvements in Vietnamese universities, more industry research and development, and a more flexible regulatory environment for entrepreneurs.
