PSU’s Insitute for Asian Studies “Faculty Focus” Series, presents Dr. Desmond Cheung, PSU Professor of Chinese History, for a free, public lecture about the smashing of statues at two famous sites in the city of Hangzhou during the Ming Dynasty period (1368-1644): the Shrine to Yue Fei and the Buddhist sculptures at Lingyin Monastery’s Feilaifeng. Dr.Cheung will discuss the political and religious motives and meanings behind these acts of cultural violence and how such acts constitute a participation in akind of public history.
