Speakers from across Oregon, Southwest Washington and Northern California will gather in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square on Saturday, Aug. 30, with a big goal: establish the first world record for attendance and participation at a Toastmasters International meeting. The speeches start at 9:30 a.m. and run until 4:30 p.m. Speakers will come from local Toastmasters clubs across the Northwest and range in age from teenagers to senior citizens. Some are professional speakers, such as Darren LaCroix, who won the World Championship of Public Speaking in 2001. LaCroix will headline an hour devoted to humor from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Some sessions will focus on job interview skills for those seeking employment. The event is free and open to the public. Toastmasters International, now in its 90th year, is a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills.
