On a recent trip to Portland I had an opportunity to view the campus at Portland State. I was extremely dismayed and disappointed to learn of the proposed destruction of the beautiful block between 11th and 12th Avenues. In a day and age when the past is quickly being destroyed, how can it be that the proposed location for the Recreation Center is here and not in another area of the campus, perhaps closer to the largest portion of the student population. Traffic and parking also appears to be a problem. How will the new center, when proposed to be constructed in a very beautiful, green, historical area of your campus be a positive addition to Portland State?

We should preserve as much of our past history and greenlands of our cities and explore other avenues. In this way we will be making a much smaller impact on the environment, yet improve the campus life for students.
