Pay:

Hours per week:
- 20–25 hours
Responsibilities:
- Oversee weekly content creation by either crafting news stories or delegating assignments to contributors
- Train and provide guidance to contributors to ensure their involvement in the publication
- Participate in weekly meetings to pitch ideas for upcoming issues
- Stay up to date on current events and relevant news
Institutional Requirements:
- Must be a Portland State student
- Undergraduates must be enrolled in at least 6 credits
- Undergraduates must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Graduate students must be enrolled in minimum of 5 credits per term
- Graduate students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
Role Requirements:
- An eye for newsworthy stories.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
- Strong writing skills and a knowledge of Associated Press style.

Copy Chief
The position includes pay on the ELSA (Educational Leadership Service Award) system; the Copy Chief currently receives $2,100 per term. More information about the ELSA award can be found here, as well as the expectations of being a Media Fellow. You also get your own desk and computer in a secure-access office.
All ELSA recipients must be Portland State students taking at least 6 undergraduate credits or 5 graduate credits (though you do not have to be enrolled in any course during summer term). Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.5 institutional GPA. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 institutional GPA.
Time Commitment:
Hours are somewhat irregular, but typically total to 15-20 hours per week. The Copy Chief is expected to maintain office hours, which can be adjusted to their school schedule.
Weekly work might look like:
– Friday: receive stories from Editor-in-Chief, send out to contributors to edit
– Saturday/Sunday: send out any remaining articles to contributors, finalize copy edits
– Monday: check and edit individual story PDFs, edit Masthead, crossword and events documents
– Tuesday: finalize PDF for full issue
– Wednesday: (flex day in production schedule, can finish issue today if behind on production)
Training:
The incoming Copy Chief will be trained by the current Copy Chief, Isabel Zerr. Time allowed, this will include a Zoom meeting with formal training on the production process, general copy editing, Chief-specific copy editing and contributor management. There will also be a mock contributor training, so the incoming Copy Chief knows how to train future contributors. Lastly, the incoming Copy Chief will shadow Isabel until taking over the role for summer term onwards.
Main Responsibilities:
– Copy edit all Vanguard articles, from copy edits on docs to finalizing copy edits on the full issue’s PDF
– Maintain PSU Vanguard House Style Guide and update as necessary
– Train incoming contributors who are interested in copy editing
– Assign articles and assist contributors as they edit, answering questions as necessary
– Maintain clear communication with Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director during production

Vanguard is always hiring writers and reporters for our News, Sports, Arts and Culture, Science and Technology and Opinion sections. We are willing to train inexperienced applicants who demonstrate writing proficiency and a desire to learn journalistic skills.

Copy Editors
Vanguard is always seeking dedicated and detail-oriented Copy Editors to join our team. Vanguard is Portland State’s student-run newspaper and media outlet that seeks to empower, educate, guide, and seek truth and report it. Vanguard has been in print since 1946 and publishes content online every week. Vanguard publishes and distributes new print issues across campus every Thursday during regular academic terms.
Vanguard seeks to provide fair, balanced, timely and comprehensive news and information to the PSU community. As part of a community of students attending a commuter school in the heart of downtown Portland, Vanguard also seeks to engage and enrich the greater Portland experience.
