Given LAIKA's growing interest in the city, it was only a matter of time before PSU and LAIKA officially collaborated. Associate Professor and Director of PSU Film School Kristin Hole, expressed enthusiasm about this connection.

PSU students and professors come together to talk politics
Civil Discourse Group encourages respectful conversation during a tumultuous election

On Oct. 28, a small group of Portland State University (PSU) students and professors gathered around a table to spend an hour discussing politics in the new PSU Civil Discourse Group. The only thing these people had in common was their goal to respect one another despite disagreeing on reproductive rights—one of the most controversial issues this election season.

Each week this election season, the Associated Students of PSU (ASPSU) hosts the Civil Discourse Group at Smith Memorial Student Union to allow members of the community to talk with others about the issues that affect them. This group is open to anybody and offers the campus a rare refuge from the divisive rhetoric that has become a hallmark of American politics.

“We wanted to make sure that if people did have feelings that they had a space where they feel like they could express it without feeling judged, without feeling discriminated against, anything like that. Students Facing Sanctions after Spring Protests
Demystifying the Student Conduct System

Following the spring 2024 protests, the conduct process was initiated for students alleged to have committed violations. Students received various penalties—referred to as academic sanctions—if found responsible. PSU Vanguard spoke with PSU’s chapter of Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (FSJP) about the conduct process, sanctions and their advocacy for students. FSJP has assisted with about a dozen conduct cases.

In the initial meeting, the conduct officer outlines the process and questions the student. According to Benitez, they pressured students to be fully transparent, saying it was in their best interest to provide information. Students were told if they were found to have withheld or lied about details, they would face harsher sanctions. The conduct officer suggested they may be more lenient if students cooperated and disclosed their involvement or information about others.

When we touch an object, our senses perceive its solidity, texture, temperature and various other characteristics. This sensation isn't simply contact between our skin and the object itself. It's actually an interaction between atomic forces at an incredibly small scale.

In the grand scheme of things, understanding touch reminds us humbly of our limited perspective and the vast universe that extends far beyond it. It encourages us to question, explore and genuinely appreciate the fabric of existence in which we participate.

This mind-bending reality doesn't make our experiences any less real or meaningful. If anything, it adds a layer of wonder to our everyday interactions. We're not just living in the world—we're constantly engaged in a complex dance of particles and forces that allow us to perceive and interact with our environment.

Satire: The end isn’t near enough
Praying for doomsday

For most of my life, the prospect of the world ending has been a lingering fear in the back of my mind. The thought is nearly impossible to escape. From our media to our education system, it's becoming common knowledge that existence as we know it is ending.

With that being said, as these issues go on, my fears are shifting. I am no longer afraid of the world ending—I'm actually starting to be concerned that it will never end.

Now my dear reader, if I was confident I was going to live a long healthy life in a stable world, do you think that I would waste my precious time waiting for a single stale donut? The answer is no—yet, here I am, caught between mundanity and catastrophe. Every year that we get closer to electric cars saving the world makes me more and more nervous that the mundanity will continue forever. It's gotten to the point where I'm rooting for Exxon.

Maybe our focus should be not on doomsday or when it will come—nor how. Doomsday is merely the chaotic accumulation of all the frivolous days we have lived. It’s too late to recycle—let mother nature wag her finger at us. If you can learn to be the chaos of today and embrace the mayhem, then maybe one day doomsday will, instead, fear you.
