Crime blotter

Deceased discovered
Apparently dead of natural causes, Stanley C. Summerall, 55, was discovered by co-workers on campus the morning of May 10.

Summerall, employed by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in Science Building 2, had not returned home from work the previous day. A call from his wife alerted his office. His body was found in a DEQ trailer parked in the gated compound west of Millar Library. Co-workers said he was believed to have had a history of heart problems.

Stuff swiped
A loss of $10,496.21 resulted from the theft of equipment from a locked office on the first floor of Millar Library. The theft occurred about 5 p.m. May 7. Missing were three laptop computers and a projector.

There was no sign of forced entry. It was believed a key was used to open the room.

A tenant of Montgomery Court left the apartment door unlocked while stepping out of the room at 10:30 p.m. May 5. When the tenant returned, a wallet lying on a bed had been stolen.

A bank card and credit card in the wallet were used to incur charges of $210 by the thief. The accumulated loss was $223.

A bicycle valued at $430 was taken from the laundry room of the St. Helens residential apartments at 4 p.m. May 5. The value was $430.

A woman who left her purse unattended for only 30 seconds in a Lincoln Hall office at 1:15 p.m. May 10 found it missing. Gone was a paycheck for $320, another check for $140 and a debit card. The thief had made four charges of $56 each on the debit card for Tri-Met tickets.

A bicycle, two locks and a helmet were taken from the north side of Smith Memorial Center at 9 a.m. May 10. The owner valued the lost articles at $1,950.

Forty dollars in cash and a credit card were taken from a wallet in a purse in an office in the Business Administration/Education building about 10 a.m. May 13. The purse was left unattended on the 2nd floor office.

Bottle dropping

A beer bottle came plummeting down from the fourth floor of the Ondine at 9:30 p.m. May 3, narrowly missing a pedestrian. CPSO officers questioned four suspects in a 4th floor room but issued no citations.

Story questioned

At 7:33 a.m. May 2, officers were called to the Ondine by a phone call saying a woman was threatening suicide by jumping off the roof. Benjamin J. Gidmark, 22, met officers to say he was the caller.

Officers found no one on the roof. They found Gidmark somewhat incoherent, relating that people were watching him. He continually wiped at his bleeding nose. Officers asked if he had been doing drugs and he said he had been doing cocaine. He led officers to his room, where they found both cocaine and marijuana. He was charged with drug possession and transported to detox.

Prohibited location
Parking in a no parking zone led to a trip to the county temporary booking facility for Lloyd E. Morisch, 32. Observed sitting in his car at Southwest Park Avenue and Jackson street at 1:30 p.m. May 8, he told officers he had just bought his lunch at McDonald’s and had stopped to eat it.

Officers found no food wrappers in the car and the driver did not appear to be eating. A check disclosed he had two outstanding warrants, one for parole violation, the other for failure to appear in court on a charge of drug possession with intent to sell. He was transported to the temporary booking facility.

Pot boiler
A male tenant of the Blackstone engaged in a verbal altercation with a female resident at 1 a.m. May 22. He complained of unauthorized use of his pots and pans by the woman in the communal kitchen. There was also a derogatory message relating to sexual orientation written on the inside of a communal bathroom.

The woman denied any knowledge of the message and no charges were filed. The man was advised to ask College Housing Northwest to mediate the dispute.

Cutting encounter
At 3:15 p.m. May 11, the owner of a bicycle locked and parked in the West Hall bike shed discovered a man in the act of cutting his lock. When accosted, the suspect rode off on a different bike and disappeared.

He was described as a white male, age 30-35, thin, 5-feet-10 to 6 feet tall, sandy brown hair, wearing a white tank top and shorts. He had multiple tattoos.

Needles parked
A total of 40 syringes were found on the person of Carl D. Sahlberg, 42, along with a metal cap containing a tar-like substance suggesting heroin.

Officers responded to a complaint of a man panhandling outside the Portland Center for Advanced Technology at 1 p.m. May 12.

They noticed the pupils of his eyes were constricted and asked him if he was taking drugs. He said he had cigarette ash in his eyes. He admitted having been arrested in California for marijuana possession. A check showed Portland police had previous contacts with him on drug matters. Asked if he had any drugs in his possession, Sahlberg said, “I don’t have any. Search me.” They did and found the syringes and black tar in his backpack. At that point he admitted he had shot up about an hour earlier. He was cited for drug possession and released.

Snooze suspended
CPSO officers have recently found the front steps of the University Honors building on Southwest 12th Avenue an attractive spot for nappers. May 14 proved no exception.

They observed Jon H.Thomassen, 38, snoozing there at 7:45 a.m. A warrants check showed he was wanted for failure to appear on two different theft charges. He got a ride to the county temporary booking facility.
