Rumble quieted
Portland police and campus officers were called to calm a fight that broke out during an NAACP-sponsored dance in the Smith Memorial Student Union ballroom at 12:50 a.m., Feb. 22. The call came from Campus Watch people who were covering the event.

Police reports indicated 15 to 20 people were involved in the dispute. When campus officers arrived, the individuals involved had already dispersed. NAACP coordinators said the event was finishing, and they were advised it would be a good idea to close down the event at that point.

Both Portland police and campus officers returned to the ballroom later for a final check and found no continuing disturbance. No subjects were contacted or arrested, and there were no injuries. The attendance at the event was estimated at approximately 230 people.
