Guitars and bongos and stilettos, oh my!

Carlos Santana is coming to town. This Sunday, to be exact. And unless you’ve been living under a rock for at least the past five years, you undoubtedly know who he is.

In 1999, the uber-guitarist released his 36th album, Supernatural, and with it came popularity with a whole new generation. Hits such as “Smooth,” performed with Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, and “Maria, Maria,” co-written with Wyclef Jean, earned him nine Grammys in 2000, including Album of the Year. Supernatural went platinum 25 times over.

But we’re jumping ahead a little. Let’s travel back in time, shall we? Santana and his band first gained popular recognition in 1969, at Woodstock. Since then, he has been turning out a “world music” of sorts, defined by blues-influenced guitar rock driven by Afro-Cuban rhythms. Along the way, he has earned too many awards to count, not only for his music but also for philanthropy. He was inducted into the prestigious Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

His latest album, 2002’s Shaman, featuring pop stars such as Michelle Branch and Macy Gray, debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.

But Santana’s success doesn’t stop at music. He also has lines of hats, percussion instruments, and super cute and sassy stilettos.
