Yep, that’s right, the PIPfest continues into it’s third week as strong as ever. This week’s highlights begin with Comtempodanza, a contemporary dance troupe out of Mexico City. They bring two unique and thought-provoking pieces to the Lincoln Performance Hall Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Their first piece, “Marea de Arenas” (Tides of Sand), uses the Spanish Sephardic Jewish culture of the 13th to 15th centuries for inspiration. While the second piece, “Espejo de Linces” (Lynx’s Mirror), is a premiere for the United States, and reflects the poetry of Oscar Oliva when he was writing about the conditions of Chiapas, a Mexican state, in 1994.
The group, as part of the opening ceremony for the streetcar, will be performing “Nicolasa” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21 on the Urban Center Plaza stage. As part of the free lecture series, Cecilia Lugo, the group’s artistic director and choreographer, will be giving a talk Thursday, July 19 at noon in the Urban Center, Room 212.
The last lecture in the series will be Tuesday, July 24 at noon and will feature Lillete Dubey, artistic director of the Primetime Theatre Company, the company performing Mahesh Dattani’s “Dance Like a Man.”
Last, but not least, master noh actor Akira Matsui and his noh theatre workshop students will be performing short pieces at the Artist Repertory Theatre, 1516 S.W. Alder, Friday night, July 20 at 7:30. Tickets for the night of noh can only be purchased at the door and are $5 for general admission and $3 for PSU students.
