Stott Center houses PSU fitness opportunities

Students need not fork out monthly dues or even leave campus to find a decent gym. The Peter W. Stott Center (PSC), located just south of the Millar library, is home to a wide variety of recreational opportunities for Portland State students, faculty and alumni.

Whether you’re an individual or team player, beginner or a seasoned athlete, PSU has activities and facilities to match your fitness style.

The School of Community Health offers many for-credit recreational classes. These courses are taught by qualified instructors and are a great way to receive specialized instruction in a particular sport or activity. Physical education classes include abs and lower body, aqua aerobics, basketball, bowling, cardio kickboxing, circuit training, funk aerobics, fencing, flex fitness, golf, racquetball, soccer, floor and sculpt step, swimming, tae kwon do, tai chi, karate, table tennis, tennis, varsity sports, volleyball, weight training, yoga and scuba.

A variety of dance courses are also taught: ballroom, belly, flamenco, Latin, Argentine tango, west coast swing and hip-hop. Look in the fall bulletin for times, locations and instructors.

The intramural program is funded by student fees and is designed to encourage the university community to participate regardless of athletic ability. Activities are offered fall through spring terms and include basketball, flag football, softball, volleyball, soccer and step aerobics. For more information on intramurals call 503-725-5647.

The Club Sports program allows students, faculty and alumni who are fairly competitive to play in a more structured environment. Activities during fall, winter and spring terms are water polo, in-line hockey, snow boarding, volleyball, tennis, tae kwon do, fencing, cycling, rugby, rowing, sailing and soccer. For more information call 503-725-5663.

The Stott Center caters to independent athletes who enjoy creating their own workouts. The weight room offers a full array of free weights as well as plate-load and Med-Ex machines. You must have a current PSU identification card to use all equipment.

The aquatics center holds the 25-meter pool for lap swimming. There are six racquetball and squash courts available daily. There are four covered tennis courts on the roof of the center and they are surrounded by a running track. Outdoor, uncovered tennis courts are located adjacent to Shattuck Hall.

If you do plan on using the Stott Center, consider paying the $12 locker room fee. The payment entitles students to check out a basket for permanent storage during the term, and includes a lock, towel and clothing. Recreational equipment, including rackets, weight belts, eye guards and balls are available on a day-use basis.
