The Meow Meow turns all-ages club scene on its head

The Meow Meow underwent a location change this past week, moving a few blocks south to 320 S.E. 2nd Ave, former home of the B-Complex. For the 21-and-under crowd, this means more opportunities to see live music, but still at a familiar and comfortable establishment. Thanks to the deluxe new environment, Meow Meow owner Todd Fadel expects to be able to expand the capabilities of the venue.

“I think the best thing is that we have the ability to do bigger shows that will, in turn, raise enough money for the space so that we can do smaller shows

without worrying about keeping it open.” Todd says. “It’s such a beautiful building, I think people will love going to shows there.”

Although the move presented financial problems at first, community support materialized and made the relocation possible.

“People have been literally coming out of the woodwork to help us. I’d say that the Portland art community has been due for a heaping helping of love and supportiveness, and it appears that there are people ready to get behind the community for the first time in a long time. That makes me really happy.”

The new surroundings promise to make musicians happy as well as concertgoers.

“I think the move of the Meow Meow to the old B-Complex is great! Better, bigger, cooler!” says Mark Weintz, drummer of local post-rock instrumental group The Vacant. The guitar-bass-drums trio will be helping to break in the new building this coming Tuesday, Jan. 20 with their distinctive sound, which is, according to guitarist Robby Russell, influenced by, “Sigur Ros, Mono, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai. The pretty and epic music that makes you feel like you’re on a boat in the middle of the sea … and the tide is slowly moving you along through life.”

Playing with The Vacant will be Ever We Fall, thebeforepicture and Consuming This Evening. The show will be all ages, of course, and, for a mere five dollars, it’s hard to go wrong here. This is the perfect opportunity to check out the Meow Meow’s new digs, support one of the few all-ages venues in Portland and see some up-and-coming local talent, all at the same time.
