ASPSU cancels senate meeting

Newly elected vice-president Dune Zhu cancelled the ASPSU senate meeting on Wednesday to avoid violation of the constitution. The cancellation, which came less than an hour before the meeting, illustrated the kinks that still need to be worked out by the new administration.

In accordance with Article II of the ASPSU Constitution, it is mandatory to make the meeting’s agenda available for all senate members and public at least 48 hours before the meeting.

The agenda had been written by 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening, according to Zhu, but because Monday was a holiday, some senators complained that the agenda should have been finished by last Friday.

“We want to make sure that we follow the constitution,” Zhu said. “Better safe than sorry.”

The meeting, which will take place next Wednesday, delayed the vote on a resolution supporting Katie Harman as the PSU commencement speaker and the relocation of the American flag to make it more visible.

The nomination and placement process of six additional senators and the approval of new “bylaws” that would reorganize the chairmanship and governing structure of certain ASPSU committees were also delayed.

“I don’t want to risk any misunderstandings,” Zhu wrote in the e-mail announcement. “I cancelled the meeting in the best interest of the Senate.”

Senator Rebecca Pierce said, “We were ready for the meeting.”
