Candlelight vigil held for Nepalese earthquake victims

On Saturday, April 25, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing over 3,000 people and displacing thousands more from their homes.

Portland State’s Nepalese Student Association will be holding a candlelight vigil tonight at 6 p.m. at Mercy Corps Action Center on SW 1st and Burnside.

The NSA will also be tabling between Neuberger and Smith Memorial Student Union tomorrow Tuesday April 28, providing students with information on how to help those affected by the earthquake.

PSU President Wiewel released a statement about the earthquake earlier today. “On behalf of the PSU community, I want to express our sympathies and support for the victims of the devastating earthquake on Saturday in Nepal,” Wiewel said in an email.

He encouraged PSU students, faculty and staff to attend this evening’s vigil. “PSU’s Nepalese Student Association….represents about a dozen of our students from areas damaged by the earthquake,” he said.

Mercy Corps Action Center is located at 28 SW 1st. In order to donate directly to emergency relief organizations, go to mercycorps.org, redcross.org or globalgiving.org
