Student senator resigns
Golden Ashby resigned this weekend from the ASPSU student senate after recent controversy regarding a charge of sexual assault made against him by another senator.
The accusations against Ashby have been the main focus of the last few senate meetings, as part of an impeachment procedure. The senate had not yet voted to impeach Ashby.
His resignation was part of a message he sent to the senate e-mail listserv, in which Ashby also stated, “I just do not have the time nor the effort to put into this.”
The current senators’ terms end April 30.
The sexual assault charge is still under investigation by the Affirmative Action Office, and no determination of guilt has been made yet.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski has declared this week as Oregon Hunger Awareness Week, and kicked off the week last Friday at the 2004 Hunger Summit in Salem.
During the summit, the Oregon Hunger Relief Taskforce presented their five-year plan for ending hunger in this state. Their program was inspired by the community interest in ending hunger expressed at last year’s summit.
Several events have been scheduled for this week in coordination with the governor’s office. On Monday, Kulongoski’s staff volunteered at the Marion-Polk Food Bank in Salem and on Thursday, there will be an Oregon Food Bank Lunch and an Albertson’s donation here in Portland.

Additionally, the Governor signed an Executive Order on Wednesday, creating the Office of Rural Policy. The new office “will focus on the needs and issues of rural Oregon,” according to a press release from
Kulongoski’s office. It also stated that members from the Office of Rural Policy will work with the public and the legislature to “coordinate the formulation of rural policy for the state.”
‘Door-to-door’ for Viking softball and cerebral palsy
Bill Porter, the now famous Portland door-to-door salesman and the subject of a television movie starring William H. Macy as Porter, will attend the Viking women’s softball game this Saturday, April 24 to help raise awareness about cerebral palsy, a disease Porter knows first-hand.
Porter will throw the first pitch and help Coach Teri Mariani sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in the fifth inning. He will also sign copies of a he book recently wrote.
The game against St. Mary’s University will take place at noon at Erv Lind Stadium, Northeast 57th and Halsey. For information on a possible rainout, a recent problem for Portland State softball, call 503-725-4400.
