Letters from the Editors: Meet Macie Harreld, Vang Letters from the Editors: Meet Macie Harreld, Vanguard's Arts & Culture Editor

Hello! I am Macie, the arts and culture editor at Portland State Vanguard. I have a bachelor's in Spanish from Boise State University, and I’m currently studying English at PSU.

As the editor of the A&C section, it is my goal to translate the creative and social aspects of our PSU community into relevant and actionable articles. Culture itself is a concept so broad it’s even difficult to define. It is only understood in slivers of fullness—language, music, visual art—and yet what couldn’t be considered a part of culture? This is the beauty of the A&C section. It is truly limitless. All around us is an opportunity for cultural analysis, embedded in street signs, park statues and graffiti art.

There’s so many exciting opportunities to highlight the talent, scholarship and cultural happenings at PSU. I prioritize covering our faculty and student research, student artists, cultural clubs and local events.

My vision for the A&C section is to produce journalism which is critical of the structures that fail to serve us equitably, highlights the perspectives of Portland’s diverse identities and illuminates opportunities for community-building around PSU.

Thank you for reading Vanguard, and if you have any suggestions for an A&C article, send me an email!

Letters from the Editors: Meet Laura Kowall, Vangu Letters from the Editors: Meet Laura Kowall, Vanguard’s sports editor

Hello, hello! First off, thank you for reading and supporting Portland State Vanguard. Second, my name is Laura Kowall, and I am the sports editor. I am a communications and arts and letters graduate—whoo Portland State class of '23—going on to further my education here at PSU this coming year. Most importantly, I am a sports fanatic.

In May of 2023, I had the opportunity to resurrect the sports section in Vanguard following its year-long absence after COVID-19. With the fall sports season here at PSU about to start, I would love to share my vision for my section with you.

Naturally, I plan to focus on our campus athletics, celebrating the victories, analyzing games and spotlighting outstanding players, coaches and staff members who contribute to the success of our university's sports.

I also take pride in featuring local sports events and leagues, strengthening the connection between our university and the broader sports community.

I believe in the importance of inclusivity, so I feature a diverse range of sports—highlighting both popular and lesser-known ones. Men's and women's sports receive equal attention, and I also want to showcase adaptive sports to promote a sense of belonging for all athletes.

In addition to game recaps and scores, I'd love to start sharing in-depth feature stories about athletes, coaches and sports-related issues which resonate with our readers.

Personal interviews and profiles will offer insight into the lives and experiences of those involved in sports, hopefully inspiring our readers and shedding light on important topics in the sports world.

By following these principles, I aim to create a sports section at Vanguard which informs, entertains and inspires our readers, fostering a strong sense of community and pride in the sports culture at PSU.

Letters from the Editors: Meet Alyssa Anderson, Va Letters from the Editors: Meet Alyssa Anderson, Vanguard’s associate news editor

I am the new associate news editor for Portland State Vanguard. I’m incredibly excited and honored to begin this position, and I am working hard to uphold the high standards of journalism held here at Vanguard.

I have a bachelor’s degree in English critical studies with a minor in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. My academic journey has and continues to pave the way for my passion for media criticism.

Currently, I am pursuing my master’s in English at PSU, focusing on queer theory and literature. My academic pursuits have only strengthened my dedication to tell real stories about real people and amplify the issues which impact the community most.

As an experienced journalist, I am committed to seeking the truth and reporting it accurately to ensure our news section remains a reliable source of information for everyone in the PSU community.

I recognize the importance of inclusivity, and am determined to make the news section an inclusive space where the voices of marginalized individuals are heard and represented.

My vision as the associate news editor is to provide relevant and impactful information to all readers, and to promote diversity and inclusivity within the publication. I believe giving voice to the marginalized and underserved is crucial in fostering community at PSU.

Letters from the Editors: Meet Kat Leon, the Edito Letters from the Editors: Meet Kat Leon, the Editor in Chief

Hello readers,

As we welcome a new year of weekly content-creation with Portland State Vanguard’s first issue of the summer, I want to start by saying how I am so excited and humbled to be your new editor in chief (EIC). In this new role, I want to share my vision for Vanguard for this year and the years to come.

Navigating the challenges brought by COVID-19 and the subsequent return to normal has been a difficult and transformative time for many of us—including us here at Vanguard. Under the leadership of our former EIC, Tanner Todd, we rebuilt and established a strong foundation, ensuring the content we created was actionable and important to our audience. I aim to build on this trajectory, further enhancing the content to ensure its relevance and—above all—to support the voices of students and the Portland State community.

My mission is to improve the quality of our content, focusing on amplifying marginalized voices, covering crucial campus news and providing a platform for students, faculty and community members who have felt unheard or ignored. I am dedicated to delivering impactful content and fostering meaningful connections with our readers.

Together, I hope we will work towards fostering an inclusive and diverse space that truly reflects the perspectives and experiences of our entire campus community. Let us embark on this journey together, creating an even stronger Vanguard which reflects and resonates with each and every one of you.

Your new EIC,
Kat Leon

Golf sustainability from a science perspective
By: Cameron Rodriguez

While often adhering to United States Environmental Protection Agency regulations, pesticides and chemicals commonly used for maintenance can still have harmful effects. As science uncovers the secondary impacts of these chemicals and regulations evolve, there is a shift towards adopting biological pesticides and improved practices which minimize chemical use.

“Intensive management practices such as frequent application of inorganic fertilizers, irrigation, and fuel consumption from mowing and leaf blowing all decrease the likelihood that urban turfgrass ecosystems can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in cities,” a University of California, Berkeley article stated.

Trimet freaks out about drugs
We can’t base drug policy on fear
By: Nick Gatlin

Trimet is taking steps to “combat drug use on our system,” which included doubling its security budget since 2020, significantly increasing security personnel on board, prohibiting smoking of any kind on transit and partnering with law enforcement to “increase safety missions around transit centers.” The merits of these steps can and likely will become debated in the coming weeks and months. There’s a bigger problem here, though. Why is Trimet deciding drug policy?

“People have a fear, a fear of the unknown. Right now, people don’t know [the] long term effect. That’s a mental fear to them.”
—Shirley Block, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757
