Renovated Stott Center has much to offer

Though the Peter W. Stott Center just underwent a one million dollar renovation mainly aimed at improving the “fan experience,” students do not have to remain merely spectators at the gym.

The Stott Center houses several different recreation areas that are easily accessible to all PSU students. They include six racquetball courts, four lighted tennis courts, two basketball courts and one of the only squash courts in the city. There is also a 25 meter pool housed in the center.

The Circuit Training room boasts bike, stair, weight, rowing and stretching machines.

Students who present their valid PSU ID get in free, though there is a fee to reserve a space in the locker room and to use the pool area. Students will also be asked to wear wristbands, issued to them upon admittance, while using some of the facilities.

Recreational classes are a good way to stay in shape and get school credit. Many conveniently take place at the Stott Center. Experienced instructors have been hired to help students in such varied areas as basketball, scuba diving, tae kwon do, golf and ballroom dancing.

For more information on upcoming sessions call the School of Community Health at 503-725-4401.

Intramural and club sports are also popular ways for students to get themselves moving. Volleyball (beginning Sept. 30), soccer (Oct. 1), basketball (Oct. 2) and flag football (Oct. 6) are all scheduled for fall term.

Students are required to sign up on the first day of each event. Spots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, so you may want to plan ahead. More information can be found online at www.intramurals.pdx.edu.

Those looking for some more diverse offerings can opt to join the Club Sports Program. Activities slated for the upcoming school year include snowboarding, fencing, cycling and sailing. Call the Club Sports Office at 503-725-5663 for more information.

Students who are only interested in the spectator side of sports will not be disappointed. The Stott Center remains the home of PSU athletics, hosting men’s and women’s basketball games, volleyball matches, and wrestling matches.

The renovation that took place this summer has made the main gym more “fan-friendly” than ever. The new floor and bleachers are scheduled to be completed this month.

The Stott Center is located at S.W. 10th and Hall Street on the PSU campus. For more information on the gym facilities or hours call 503-725-4977.
