Portland State University’s commitment to providing students tools for personal growth and development, multicultural understanding and enrichment and leadership opportunities is mirrored in the University’s Student Services programs and organizations.
Portland State has several programs designed to cater to the needs of students seeking to remove transitional barriers to personal success in a higher education environment.
The vice provost for Student Affairs acts as administrator of various student services including the Office of Student Affairs, the Career Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Educational Equity Programs and Services, Enrollment Services, Information and Academic Support Center, Student Health Services and Student Services as listed in the University Bulletin.
The Office of Student Affairs located in Room 433 of Smith Memorial Center provides assistance to students in dealing with administrative issues, faculty, staff and other students. They are also the primary route of appeal when dealing with unfair treatment and disciplinary issues.
The Information and Academic Support Center, popularly known as the IASC, is an important stomping ground for students. Located at Room 425 in SMC, it provides students with information referrals to all other university academic departments and services. The Center also provides students with extensive guidance for general education requirement advising and an academic support program for students plagued with low grades.
The Disability Resource Center, located in Smith Memorial Center Room 435, aims to ensure the rights of students with disabilities and is an excellent resource for academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services, training, consultation and technical assistance.
For returning women students, the university has a Mentor Program designed to assist you in making the change comfortable by holding weekly drop-in sessions and hosts orientations for potential new students. Located in Room 425 of SMC, the program is for undergraduate and graduate women students.
Student athletes arriving at PSU can work directly with the Student Athlete Academic Advisor in Room 224 at the Peter Stott Center to assist them with academic advising and scheduling.
The Tutorial and Learning Skills Program, Upward Bound, and Veterans Services are other resources open to students looking for assistance in the different areas specialized in by the organizations.
The Educational Equity Programs and Services, located in Room 425 in Smith Center “manages various programs and services that increase access for, and improve the retention of, students from low-income, ethnic, and other disadvantaged groups that are underrepresented in post-secondary education,” as stated in their brochure.
The Educational Equity Programs and Services consists of the Diversity Achievement Scholarship Programs/Portland Teachers Programs, Student Support Services, Educational Opportunity Program, Native American Student Services, Project Connect: Mentors for New Students and an Educational Talent Search: Project Plus Program.
