Track opens at Sacramento State

Saturday, March 6, opened the 2004 Outdoor Track season as Sacramento State hosted the Hornet Open. The Vikings took first place in seven events and won their first outdoor open of the season. The Vikings broke two Portland State outdoor records.

The Viking men’s team competed against 19 teams and took first in the meet with a total of 339.50 points. Southern Oregon took second place with 328.50 points, Stanford took third place with 322 points, Sacramento grabbed fourth place with 293 points, and Oregon Institute of Technology took fifth place with 260 points.

The Viking men’s 4×400-meter relay “B” team won their race with a time of 3:26.60. Senior Anthony Robinson won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.76. Josias Flynn and Paul Miller finished second and third in the same race. Senior Evan Garich took second in the 800-meter race at 1:54.60. Freshman Kenneth Mackins took fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.93.

Freshman Jordan Senn won the javelin in his Viking track and field debut with a throw of 201′ 9.5″. Senn’s mark ranks third in the Vikings all-time outdoor records. Fellow freshman Brandon Meyers grabbed second place in the high and long jump events.

The Viking women’s team competed against 14 other teams. The Viking women won the open with 388.50 points. Oregon Institute of Technology took second place with 336.50, and Southern Oregon finished third place with 314 points. Stanford University claimed fourth with 263 points and Sacramento State grabbed fifth place with 239.50 points.

Junior Ena Shemi won both the 100 and 200. Her times were 12:12 and 24.66. Shemi’s time in the 200 was her school personal record and was .66 seconds away from Portland State’s all-time outdoor record.

Freshman Audrey Oswald broke the hammer throw record with her fourth place mark of 165’8″. Freshman Cassie Rossette ranks second in Portland State’s hammer throw with a mark of 139’1″.

Sophomore Gayle Imran claimed first place in the triple jump with a leap of 38’3.75″. Imran’s mark ranks third in Portland State’s all-time outdoor records.

The Viking women’s 4x400m-relay team took first place with a time of 47.2. The women’s team broke the school outdoor record of 47.53 (2003).

Junior Olivia Palmero took second place in the 200, and senior Brady Randall grabbed second place in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.

Freshman Andrea Clarke made her Viking debut and grabbed second place in the javelin. Clark had a throw of 132’5″. Clarke’s throw ranks seventh in Portland State’s all-time outdoor records. Freshman Bobeya Krishnek finished fifth in the 1500-meter race with a time of 4:44.50.

Both PSU track teams will have the week off to prepare for the Oregon Preview. Both mean and women’s track teams will travel to Eugene, Oregon for their second outdoor meet on Saturday, March 20.
