Protesters represent both sides

Protesters both in support of and in opposition to Operation Iraqi Freedom rallied on Portland streets March 20, following the start of coalition bombing in Iraq. The protests resulted in approximately 135 arrests, as anti-war demonstrators gathered in a circle at the Westside off-ramp of the Burnside Bridge, refusing to leave.

Mayor Vera Katz and Police Chief Mark Kroeker stated that policing war demonstrations could cost the bureau $5.7 million in overtime expenses by June 30, the end of the 2002-04 fiscal year-about $100,000 to $200,000 a day.

While demonstrations have been less intense in turnout, falling from the hundreds that gathered on March 20 and 21, portland.indymedia.org shows that those in opposition to the war have not given up their cause. Pro-war rallies have continued to be held throughout the city as well.
