If you’ve ever walked the stacks of Portland State’s Branford Price Miller Library, you’ve likely noticed the distinctive hard-cloth bindings on a number of books on the shelves. From academic journals to dissertations, many of the library’s specialty bookbinding needs are performed by a community of Trappist monks from the Our Lady of Guadalupe Trappist Abbey in Carlton, Oregon.

Since their creation, TV shows and films have been powerful tools that can shape the views, perspectives and knowledge of thousands. Portland State Film Studies Program Director Courtney Hermann recognized that a major part of her work is the impact film media can have. “I feel that teaching students media production really does have the potential to change the world because… media is so instrumental in shaping the way that we understand our world,” she said. “It’s a big responsibility and something that I’m interested in handling… in terms of teaching the next generations to manage that responsibility.” 📸 Jordan Rasmussen

OP: There has been a constant and growing pall of existential dread for Generation Z, millennials and Generation X alike when looking at the overwhelming data around climate change. For much of our lives we have been warned that catastrophic climate change would be imminent unless drastic measures were taken to stop or at least reduce carbon emissions.

And for much of that time the oil, gas, coal, automobile, plastic and various other industries who all reap massive profits from fossil fuels pushed a disinformation campaign comparable to that of the tobacco industry in trying to persuade the public that scientists were exaggerating and that climate skepticism was a valid position.

Mike Bennett’s Dinolandia exhibit, which is showing in Portland until Sept. 10, appeals to the inner child in its visitors, presenting vibrant, fun cartoon dinosaurs which come to life as you travel back in time to the prehistoric era. One of the best parts of being a child is one’s ability to imagine, question and explore the world unfettered by stress and unbound by reality—to understand the world as it is and as it could be within the invention of one’s own imagination. Bennett’s exhibit aims to revive this feeling in his visitors, as well as to spark joy and teach both the kids and the kids-at-heart about dinosaurs.

For the past few years, downtown Portland businesses have increasingly begun to hire security guards in order to protect their property from those most affected by the many crises of our world. This is a mistake.

I work and attend school downtown and, like many people, I am afraid at times. But the decision to contract with armed, unaccountable, minimally-trained private security companies is as dangerous as it is commonplace, and the impact it has on employees and the community in which many of us live and work is real.

It is important to understand the current context of Portland and to consider how the Portland Business Alliance, Portland Police Association and conservative Political Action Committees (PACs)—like People for Portland—have engaged in a full-court press intended to control the levers of power in our city. These organizations have consistently used their resources on disingenuous ad campaigns meant to skew perceptions of Portland as they continue to over-police people who lack resources.

OP: Since I started paying close attention to politics over the last eight years, I have noticed time and time again calls for a general strike as a response to various repressive policies or legislation, the latest of which being a call for a general strike in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

While a general strike that shut downs the economy would give bargaining power back to the working class when negotiating with a capitalist elite who are exploiting their labor at an increasing rate, the foundation required to pull off a large-scale coordinated general strike is missing enough pieces to make the chances of that happening frustratingly low.

It’s clear from first glance that the Fool’s Gold exhibit transforms the gallery into something unique. As a result of the orange layer pasted over the usually clear windows at Portland’s HOLDING Contemporary gallery, the normally white walls inside appear neon orange. Upon entering the gallery, the orange light fades, but still subtly bathes the Pacific Northwest space in a light reminiscent of the Mojave Desert, where Fool’s Gold exhibit artist Jodie Cavalier grew up.

The subject matter of Cavalier’s work often revolves around the lives of her family members, and this project is no exception. It focuses on the life of Cavalier’s grandfather, who passed away from COVID-19 in 2021. Cavalier’s show is a multimedia project that uses ceramics, seemingly ordinary objects and a select few printed pieces to transform the gallery space.

The show runs from June 3 to July 30, with gallery hours from Friday to Saturday 12–5 p.m. A closing ceremony will be held on July 30 at the gallery from 5–7 p.m. and include a publication that will provide additional context for different pieces in the exhibit.

NEWS: Portlanders will vote on a ballot measure that would dramatically alter the structure of Portland city government this November. The proposal would make three major changes to Portland’s charter. First, it would institute ranked choice voting for city elected officials, allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference rather than casting a single vote for one candidate.

Second, it would increase the number of city council members from five to 12, with three each representing four new geographic districts.

Third, the proposal would give sole legislative authority to the city council, removing the mayor entirely from council except in the case of a tie-breaking vote. Instead, the mayor would have exclusively administrative powers, and the authority to nominate city officials for the council’s approval. A new city administrator would take control of overseeing the city’s bureaucracy, a role that is currently fulfilled by the five commissioners.
